It was nice to have a type one diabetic as the main character! I ended up liking this book overall!

Lucy Szabo, aka Sweetblood, is a 16 year old goth girl with an intriguing theory of how vampire legends came to be. SHe thinks that the people who first inspired vampire legends were actually dying of untreated diabetes. As a diabetic herself, she knows the symptoms.
This excellent book takes an unflinching look into the life of a diabetic, who also happens to be a girl longing for a normal life and friends who can accept her the way she is. Teens will relate to her feelings of alienation and the way she makes choices that aren't always best for her.

I found this on our library shelves awhile back when I was looking for lunchtime reading. Here's a four-word synopsis: diabetes, vampires, goth culture.
This is a YA book that deals with the anger of a teenage girl with diabetes, anger towards herself mostly, but directed outward. She equates her illness with the symptoms of vampirism from the Middle Ages (an interesting and telling theory). She's a goth. Her mother calls her Sweetie/Honey/Sugar. She attracts the attention of a very creepy guy.
And, as in most YA fiction, most of the loose ends are tied up at the end. Still, I'd say the premise of this book was one of the more fascinating I've come across, and it's pretty realistic about teenagers.

I just don't love this. I was hoping for something supernatural but it really was just a girl comparing vampirism to diabetes. Lots of problems with this.

I think the idea was good and the characters were okay, they could have been fleshed out way more.
I felt it needed bigger build-up to her life crashing down.

This book was really interesting. I talk about the diabetes/vampire connection a lot. I can't remember much about the story but I remember finding this very evocative
