This novella was recommended to me by a stranger in a bookstore. Sometimes taking a recommendation like this pays off, and this one sure did.

The story itself is written in the format of letters going back and forth between good friends who start to be torn apart upon the rise of Hitler, and the the one friend, falling under the spell of the nazi regime.

Crazy to see the progression of the brainwashing that occurs as the later letters are sent and received. Even crazier that this work was written not only real time back in the 1930's, but by a woman no less, who so masterfully captured the sentiments of the time, while hiding her identity.

Really interesting take on the times.

This book is over 80 years old and is still relevant today… which is a shame and proves that history repeats itself. In the book two friends write to each other about the uprising of WW2 in Eastern Europe. One friend is Jewish and the other is apart of the German forces (aka he is a Nazi). The second friend becomes consumed in the propaganda and cannot see past Hitler’s reign. This book illuminates the current issues that plague the world with the inhumane treatment of the Palestinian people. It baffles me how people can still be so ignorant on this issue. I urge anyone who still cannot comprehend how the current genocide is being compared to the genocide of the Jewish population in WW2 to pick up this quick yet mind provoking read.

What a powerful book! It gives a portrayal of how Hitler and his regime was able to worm its way into the lives of many in their own country, wooing them into supporting and loving Hitler; but that quickly turned to oppression, persecution, and domination. This small book tells its story so effectively through letters back and forth between two best friends, one a Jewish American and the other a German.

This story was originally published in Story magazine in 1938. When it was published, it became a sensation internationally. I read that it was credited for exposing the dangers of Nazism to Americans early on.

This story is so well done and in my opinion should be required reading. It is short enough to be easily read in a day or maybe even in one sitting.

This book was interesting. The ending has me thinking still, but it was a very quick read. It was direct and got the point across nicely. Still picking my brain a little bit and i would say it’s more of a 3.5 than a 4.
