I really enjoyed A Strange and Stubborn Endurance. It fits very easily into a small niche of romance novels which I adore - SFF with politics or court intrigue, and a central relationship based as much or more on friendship and mutual support as romance.
I very quickly became invested in not only the two central characters but also Markel, who is Velasin's valet and best friend. Their friendship is a joy to read and I really appreciate the inclusion of sign language and disability in the book (Markel is mute).
You may wish to check out content warnings before reading this book. Some of the events are not easy to read, and one character in particular deals with a lot of trauma - largely handled well I think, though I don't profess to be the right person to judge this.
Overall I really liked this book, and I am very much looking forward to the sequel.

I did not know the plot or summary going into my read but I absolutely adored this book! This story is romantic, suspenseful, heartbreaking, and inspiring. I loved the two main characters, Velasin and Caethari. Both characters had distinct voices and reading from each of their perspectives was a joy. The side characters were well fleshed out and added yet another layer of loveliness to the story. The romance in this is slow-burn and endearing. The pace, to me, was just right and I enjoyed how the mystery element unfolded. There are some scenes that are unpleasant, so please read the content warnings. However, I highly recommend this book. I cannot wait until the sequel comes out and I can spend time with these lovely (albeit fictional) people once again!

I liked the premise and diversity of characters but I struggled with the pacing which I found very slow.
I think this book would work well with someone who enjoys being immersed in a different world, even if not a lot happens.
