At some point I was tired of the constant shitstorm happening. If there was a peaceful moment you could be sure it will be interrupted by someone rushing in announcing someone murdered or attacked. I also got confused with who's-who on several occasions and overall the storytelling and pacing was a bit messy for me to enjoy. Some parts of the book are top notch and I will continue with the next book, however it was not the five star I was expecting.

I loved this book so much! While there are some heavy subject matters, the main focus is this beautiful love story between two very loveable characters. Not to mention the queer and Trans representation is prevalent and so well done. I raced through this book in 2.5 days and couldnt wait to rush to the sequel. No notes, 5+ stars!

WOW it’s the first time I’ve seen non binary people being as visible and as ingrained into a fictional culture that’s so well laid out! It’s not just one side character being non binary, it’s a society where non binary people r acknowledged as such and also present throughout the story (either as main character or side characters)! Even trans and other queer folks are included in a thought out way that just makes sense in this culture. I love the use of thei/thim/thir pronouns and other words for some of the recognized identities we have today. The use of words other than the ones we adopted in our modern world really breathed life into this fictional world and made the world way more immersive.

I’ll be honest, half way through the book I was fully convinced that
Raeki
was the rat so I was thoroughly surprised by the reveal. But I love the twist a lot, it made sense when you think back on it. And I wonder if the emphasis on the
color palette that was used in Laecia’s private quarters is to alert the reader about her dissatisfaction with her house.
Maybe I’m reading into it too much.

I have to admit that I constantly mix up the names for places and countries. Not that it hindered my reading too much, because all I had to do is to check the world map again. I think it’s the Qs and Xs in the beginning of words that are messing with my brain.

Absolutely loved the development of the relationship between Velasin and Caethari. I wish it would’ve burned more slowly but it was very sweet once they open up to each other so I can’t complain. I honestly love all the other side characters too. They (the important ones) were all pretty fleshed out and interesting to read about. Even the villains.

I really enjoyed this. It even used my favorite word (wroth) twice. The representation is lovely. However, I didn’t love that it switched back and forth between first person for Vel and third person for Cae. And the mystery was a little like… surprise!! Something bad happened! Over and over again until it was revealed kind of without fanfare. Idk. Small, nitpicky things. Overall I really liked it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAH 😩 I can’t remember the last time I loved a book this much!  I will say that I was very intimidated by this book because the audiobook is NINETEEN HOURS long. I prefer to stick with 6-7 hours, and can handle 10-12 at the most if I really think it’s worth it. I was honestly expecting this to be a DNF because of sheer length, but boy am I glad I tried it anyway. It really didn’t feel nearly as long as it was; every chapter actually had a point, every scene moved the story along. I never once felt like the plot was dragging or was needlessly prolonged (like I so often do with longer books, especially in fantasy). And, surprisingly for me, I actually loved the romance and how that storyline was handled. I often get impatient/frustrated with romance because it feels either way too rushed or stretched out for no reason, and this was neither. God this book was incredible. Well done, Foz Meadows. You have a new super fan.

I'd give this 6 stars if I could. My only (very small) grievance is the inconsistent narrative perspective (Vel gets first person, Cae gets third person).
