I didn't actually finish this one because you literally need to roll a die throughout the experience. 3 stars for the concept and execution though. It's a choose your own adventure style comic. Just know that going in.

This is a collection of a five issue miniseries that serves as an off the wall choose-your-own-adventure. You play the first issue, then the middle three in a possible random order, then the last issue, with each issue being a relatively self-contained adventure. I played through the whole thing (dying many times but going back to the start of the issue rather than the start of the series), and then read over the paths I missed.

If you're going to do this type of thing, Deadpool (with his usual fourth wall breakage) is a good choice. I'm not a big fan of the comics character, but he works great in this setting. (To give you a sense of the gonzo nature, in the tutorial section, Deadpool is attacked by writer Kieron Gillen with a sandwich.) Ewing sets up the three middle sections in different decades of Marvel history, and Deadpool's interaction with all of them is funny and energizing.

I need to give a special mention to Espin's art. Not only does he depict different eras of Marvel's history quite well, but he handles the ridiculous panel layouts with ease. (Because of the choose-your-own-adventure nature, adjacent panels may have nothing to do with each other.) I can't envision a better artist for this type of endeavor.

For about $16, I got a pretty good payoff --- at least 3 hours of work to get through the whole thing. At times, it did feel like a bit of a slog; in issue 3, I resorted to note-taking to try and figure out what to do. And, to be honest, I'm not sure I want to go through the series again (even though there is an achievements page to work on if you wish). But as a one-off experience, it was pretty fun.

Ugh. I can't believe how much of this I read before reminding myself how much I dislike Choose-Your-Own-Adventures. And how much I dislike Deadpool. My brain has melted and not in a good way. And yet it is far from the worse Deadpool I've ever read.

This is so much fun to play and easily the most Ive ever liked Deadpool. Sadly I dont think I'll go through it again to see what I missed since I've never been that type of Choose your own Adventure type player. Also theres some jokes in here that are just a bit too Marvel-fan centric that could oust a new comic reader from getting the full enjoyment as well as some recurring bits that even I dont particularly understand like Ewing's insistence on Grasshopper showing up a bunch lmao.

When comics and RPGs merge this is the wonderful brainchild. I haven't seen one of these since they were pitched in "Big", but it's waaaaaay better than those stuffy execs ever thought.

I'm going on a long trip with minimal packing space. I'm making room for this.

Who knew you could be bad at a comic book.

This was generally fun to read, although the execution was a little rough. I imagine I would have had an even harder time with a physical comic. Still, the format was neat, and we got a hint of that good Dadpool content, not to mention a hilarious Daredevil cameo.

I’m not sure if I would read it again, but I would recommend it to others as a way to kill an hour or so!

What’s better than a choose your own adventure featuring Deadpool?
