This book is told by two people at 2 different times. One during occupation of Poland and the other during present time. The eventual reveal that it was a grandmother/granddaighter telling their stories. I ran hot/cold with the characters of this book. The present day story is of a woman with 2 kids, one who has autism and the other is extremely intelligent, while managing everything due to her husband being so unhelpful (her feelings, not mine) She is coping with her grandma's stroke and how her own mother, a judge (very competent) has no understanding of people or emotions?? I understand this was to create a parallel of struggle, but it didn't work for me. I found the present day story and characters 1 dementional, while the occupation story more engaging and clearly the story the author wanted to tell. I feel like the author caved to the times of writing parallel story likes with a 50 year difference that is popular

I’ve had this on my holds ready to read for a while but was waiting to be in the right mindset for a more serious read. I’m glad I gave it the time and space it needed because it was truly a beautiful story! While switching between the past and present is quite typical for historical fiction, I feel like Rimmer did a wonderful job of weaving similar themes through both. Would highly recommend!
