Really thought this was an enjoyable story. Both the past and present plotlines and characters were enjoyable and intriguing. I was definitely holding my breath at points and couldn't read this fast enough to know what was happening.

Excuse me while I wipe my tears, geez this book was heartbreaking and beautiful. In this book you follow two women's points of view. You follow Alina through Nazi occupied Poland and as you can imagine it's a heartbreaking story. You also follow Alice who is in the present day trying to navigate potentially losing her grandmother and her family life. This is an amazing book, but be prepared for sadness. Do not read this on your period

I loved the story about Alina and Tomasz and Poland and how Alice, as the grandchild to Babcia, came to realize the truth of what had been needed for survival and was able to give her grandmother that closure and reconciliation with Amelia. That is where my 3 stars come from. But I just simply could not connect with Alice and her present story. I appreciate how Alice's trip tied it all together. But I did not like all the "current" characters. The characters seemed so cliche and I was ultimately annoyed by them. It was all so predictable. Part of it could be that I listen to audiobooks (I have an hour commute each way to work). So the present day "Alice" chapters really irritated me by voice alone. But overall I had to struggle to get through the book and the only thing that had me hang on was the confirmation of the identity story from Poland. I LOVE historical fiction, so that part was worth the listen for me.

4.5 stars - great book, just wish the end gave me a little more
