I read this one out loud at bedtime to the kids. To be honest I didn’t have huge expectations or hopes for it as a grown-up, but was pleasantly surprised that the plot wasn’t all that predictable and the author worked hard to put thoughtful and realistic diversity and complex characters in for a kid’s novel. Also as a sci-fi fan I can confirm there was some decent world building in here. So while still definitely a book for upper elementary aged kids, I enjoyed it.

This was the book I was most excited to read and it was exactly what I hoped it would be!! This is such a rich and fascinating world, with lots of lore, dragons, and fun pop culture bits. The story was surprisingly complex, and London did a great job portraying life in a city run by gangs that was age-appropriate and created such fascinating stakes. We also love a healthy parent-child relationship, and even within Abel's mixed up family loyalties, there was still a really beautiful coming together community aspect. Also the dragon battles were super duper cool.

This was such a great book! Dragon battles. Kins. Family. It was absolutely thrilling and I think a lot of middle grade kids would really love it.

A boy learns that grown ups are complicated and no one is what they seem.

I really enjoyed this book! There were lots of twists and turns and it went really fast for me. I would definitely recommend to anybody who loves action, adventure, and a little bit of humor. In fact, this is my second time reading it!
