Harrow the Ninth is a masterpiece with a story to tell between the lines. At one point a character describes two immortal magicians as having a conversation "simply by reading each other's gestures and expressions and maybe a grunt, an indecipherable code based on familiarity". Harrow the Ninth is that book.

The impact of the moment-to-moment reveals and motivations of the characters make for a fast-paced first read, but there is a stunning depth to this book that only becomes obvious after all the dust has settled and the last page has turned. People suffer deeply here, and the glimmers of their hope and light and passion are made pivotal in that contrast.

You owe it to yourself to read the Locked Tomb series.

A truly challenging read, with the main character wrestling with understanding as much as the reader. The highly unusual perspective, the nonlinear storytelling and the multiple parallel but highly integrated plotlines leave you wondering for most of the book what is going on - without ever giving you a break or tempting you to put the book down.

I don't know how to review this book without just listing all the swear words I know.

I felt like I was going crazy for like 2/3rds of the book. then in the last act I finally got it and the payoff was incredible. And then in the last chapter, just kidding you don't understand anything. Which is what I've come to expect from the Locked Tomb, so five stars.

Excellent use of the second person. The worldbuilding feels very indepth and detailed, despite the fact we spend so little time out in the world.
