This book was equal parts good and confusing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this even though it felt like I didn't know what the fuck was going on half the time. I haven't read a fantasy book with this concept before and it was a nice change of pace.

Never have I enjoyed being so completely confused so much. I have absolutely never read a book like this before, and was so captivated by the bonkers premise that it didn't even matter that none of it was explained until the very end of the book (or wasn't explained at all). This was extremely different than book 1, in more than just the plot or the bonkers premise, so at first I wasn't sure I liked it (I really liked Gideon as a character and narrator, and this book is told from Harrow's perspective (... kind of...)). But it quickly hooked me through my desire to become less confused, which I kind of did. Gonna have to read Alecto though. Also gonna have to re-read everything before reading it, since it doesn't come out until 2022. 11/10 for originality.

I disagree with some of the structural/editorial/writing choices of the book. Also it takes too long to get to the point. Still entertaining and I still read it and I am going to read the next one, so. Do with that what you will.
Graphic: Murder, Death, Injury/Injury detail, Medical content, Medical trauma, Gaslighting, Cursing, Gun violence, Body horror, and Blood
Moderate: Colonisation, Genocide, Suicidal thoughts, Death of parent, and Domestic abuse

this book is one of best books i have ever read. these series is so close to my heart. i love absolutely about it: the characters, the hardly coherent but still chaotic plot, the general lack of understanding throughout this whole book — in a word, perfection.
i would’ve expected harrow to be in a fit of utter despair over gideon at the start of this, but instead, we find our little necromancer is on her way to be a lyctor with absolutely no memory of gideon whatsoever. her whole life is a recollection of false memories we know not be true. that made me miss gideon a lot. i guessed it was gideon narrating this whole thing (i mean have you looked at the remarks made sometimes about harrow?), but it still shocked me to the core when it was revealed.
the characters are total goofballs. god is…chill, and honestly the biggest mood. mercymorn aging harrow down on a daily basis is one of the biggest running jokes throughout the whole book, i absolutely adore it LOL. ianthe is one of the main characters in this book, glad we get a lot more insight on her.i am worshiping each and every one of these characters.
gideon nav. the bane of my existence. when i tell you i screamed when she…posessed(?) harrow’s body and got a more clear perspective, im severely toning it down. the action and the fight scenes kick off her perspective, and im instantly left idolizing her again. her running commentary is so fun to read, i was cackling the whole time. even the reveal of her parents — she is literally god’s child! — was made hilarious by tamsyn muir. like i mentioned, the plot twist reveals in this book are freaking awesome.
speaking of the plot, i still have no idea what exactly happened. that surprisingly didn't ruin by experience, quite the opposite actually. i think the best part was that the previous characters who got killed off came back, and i loved each and every one of them unconditionally. ortus getting his redemption arc was the cutest thing ever! i liked how he was just giving throughout this whole book.
basically, the author could write a hundred more books and i’d read them all. can't wait to finish the series!
