I really did enjoy this book. It is a compelling story from start to finish BUT it is hard to reconcile my feelings on the book overall with the controversy of the author. I think it is important conversation to have about who gets to write what stories and what voices we as readers amplify. Despite this, the writing itself is very good and it was a gripping story.

This story was OK. It had a great beginning and a great premise, but as the story progressed it fell flat, became predictable and lacked depth. I was glad to finish it so that I could move to something else.

 I listened on audiobook and it really brought the story to life, making me rethink some of what I believe about immigrants. This would be a great companion book to Grapes of Wrath for HS students.
