Synopsis
Red and Blue are two agents in a war that spans timelines and planes. When Red finds a letter in the ashes of mission she's just completed a correspondence of sorts begins between the two. Boasting and goading quickly becomes discussions of etiquette and philosophies and much more. Over the letters the question remains, will they risk their lives for one another?

Red, Scarlett, Vermilion and Pomegranates
Red begins as untrusting, stiff an methodical in her correspondence. She wants nothing more to win, but as the plot moves she grows and she changes and she becomes something so much more than she was. I loved watching her discover herself and make her own choices about what she will become.

Blue, Sapphire, Indigo, and Waves
Blue begins open and confident, she appears to the be the one of the two who is more willing to take risks. She seems to want more than just winning straight from the beginning. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. I really enjoyed reading her actions and learning about the Garden through her.

Words like rhythm, poetry, and bird song
The way this book is written is lyrical and poetic. Each sentence varies in length, providing a rhythm to the reader. Very little is overtly described, but there is so much given in the prose that imagery, swirling like a fever dream, can be plucked from the words. It is a bit of a wild ride. I was turning pages fast at some points, going back and re-reading sentences at others.

I would do it all over again and strongly recommend it to anyone.

I’m gonna be honest I found this book kinda pretentious. I don’t like a “learn on the job” approach to lore/world building when I barely have time to get a sense of what the actual setting is - and the mental mindfuck of added details made me feel even more lost at sea.

I loved the letters and the main characters’ dynamic. Some scenes had prose-writing so beautiful it read like poetry. The final quarter of the book had me in its grasp.

This book had a dreamlike quality to it, like a fairy tale. It feels like if 1984 meets Snow White meets Revolutionary Girl Utena meets Camus’ The Stranger

This is a weird one. Everything here is taken to the extreme. The writing style is so exaggerated and pretentious that it comes off as embarrassing. Despite the existence of time travel, most of the references the characters make revolve around the 1900s and recent human history. The main characters themselves are described in such a way that they feel more like concepts than actual people, down to their names of "Red" and "Blue".

Yet, I can't help but respect these authorial decisions even while I'm annoyed by them. They had a vision in mind, and they wrote it exactly as they wanted to without care for the reader's opinion. (Either that, or they genuinely thought this style of writing is enjoyable.) I don't love it, but I respect it.

The first half was kinda confusing, but everything comes together in the end and I never even thought of the plot twists. The writing was beautiful but sometimes hard to understand.
It was giving inception
