This book was so awesome! Loved the world and the characters! And the Star Wars vibes! So great! I need more!

It's a great read, with good characters who create solid relationships. I'm a sucker for "building the team" stories, and this is definitely that kind of a book. I'm very excited to see where the team goes from here; they've won a battle, but the war is very much still their problem.
My one complaint--and it's very minor--is that I'm still not entirely sure what a shido (the weapon of the main character) actually looks like. It's somewhere between a staff and a bladed weapon, but the description of the weapon is vague enough that I'm not sure how the blades attach. Which, as I said, is a small thing.

Moreci, Michael. Black Star Renegades. Black Star Renegades No. 1. St. Martin’s P, 2018.
Black Star Renegades is what happens when a book editor gets a bright idea to ask a comic book writer who he knows is a space opera fan to write a novel in homage to Star Wars. So, no light sabers but we do have magical Japanese blades that jump into the hand of the person most in tune with the analog of the force. There is a blind martial arts mentor. There is an evil plot to take over the galaxy. There is a young man who has to learn his potential as a warrior. Get the idea? But say this for it, it is not as mind-killingly dull as most of the Star Wars novelizations.

3.5 stars. Buddy read. Not my favorite, but gets better as it goes! Will read the sequel at some point.

The book is pretty though I don't think it's the best Sci fi book ever. I do definitely see homages to Star Wars and the characters are likable enough and I'm curious to see where they'll go with the story.

First couple of chapters was enough. More cliches than I care to count. Ripoff of star wars. The writing was stilted. I enjoy comic books. The author should stick to writing comics.

Hmmm. I really wanted to like this. I see many people DID like this. But, oh. OK. This was pretty derivative. Now, this might have been intended, and I could have lived with it if it was really sold, but I just could not make it past the writing. It was all over the place and occasionally painful. Also . . . character transitions. These must be hard to write, but I just did not feel like the author managed to sell these. I always feel like I should apologize when I don't like a book. Sigh.

I don't want to say it's just like star wars, because there's a lot more to the book than that, but boy howdy it's a lot like star wars.
