Over the top action and a retelling of Homer's Odyssey (I do not consider that a spoiler!) did not save the book.
The duo authors entertain, but it would have been better with less action and more real discoveries and people.
The 3 stars are rounded up, more like 2.5 stars the book deserves.[b:White Fire|17159011|White Fire (Pendergast, #13)|Douglas Preston|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388193320s/17159011.jpg|24152432][b:White Fire|17159011|White Fire (Pendergast, #13)|Douglas Preston|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388193320s/17159011.jpg|24152432]
Regarding that the Gideon Crew books where always not as good as the Pendergast-Series, and even there I found the last few sorely lacking (Nazis? for real?), I think they have lost it. The next book by them, [b:White Fire|17159011|White Fire (Pendergast, #13)|Douglas Preston|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388193320s/17159011.jpg|24152432], is already on my new Kindle Voyage, but I will read other books first.
Not recommended.

Cyclops were not on the bingo card for this one. But neither was any hope of this being good soooo

This is my favorite of the Gideon Crew series. Here you have ancient texts and maps, a treasure hunt, and plenty of twists and turns as Gideon finds his environment constantly changing due to circumstances he can't control. Some of the plot was predictable but in true Preston & Child fashion the adventure just kept going and going.

There are references to their earlier book The Ice Limit and though it is not necessary to have read it to follow this one, having read The Ice Limit first will make some things more clear about Glinn and his team.

I started this book not realizing that it was a series and I immediately jumped into the next few once I was done with this one.

These books are all great and I enjoyed every minute!

Okay. This is the best of the three Gideon Crew books. Sadly, that's a bit of faint praise, since I really didn't like the first two books in the series. Still, it's written by Preston and Child, so there are some fun passages, even if I did have to roll my eyes frequently at some of the plot twists. In the last 1/3, things REALLY take a turn for the weird, and in a Preston/Child book that's really saying something.

Still, if you're looking for a quick, mindless adventure book, you can do a lot worse. Check your brain at the door, and enjoy the popcorn.

PS. For longtime Preston/Child fans, there are some threads that continue from THE ICE LIMIT here, and the promise that the next novel in the series will *finally* resolve some the plot threads leftover from that novel so long ago!

Once again, it is not my favourite Preston and Child read. It is not bad, but it has nowhere near the atmosphere, storyline and intrigue of the Pendergast series. However, I will continue reading the remaining two novels in this series. Hopefully, the series ends on a high.
