I had a really hard time getting into this book. The worldbuilding is amazing and so very thorough and learning that the author was 15 when he wrote this is incredible. So incredible that I'm jealous as a want to be author at 26. But, there are times you can tell that the author was 15. It seemed like there was a lot of detail that didn't need to be there, like he wasn't giving readers enough credit to understand what was going on. Plus, we don't need to know every time the characters are hungry or tired--we get it. Also, this was full of every trope from the fantasy genre imaginable. There's nothing wrong with tropes, there is a reason they're popular. But fitting them all in while not even turning them on their head made the book more cliche and predictable. And to put it plainly, I was bored the whole time. This book had so much potential but the writing made it fall flat, and I don't think I'll be continuing the series.

Rereading this was like hugging an old friend and catching up. The first time I read Eragon, I was 16/17 years old and I was completely immersed in the world; the same thing happened this time around.
I wish there were more books about dragons, and I’m so glad Christopher Paolini has created The World of Eragon with the Inheritance Cycle books. While I typically want at least a little romance in my fantasy books, it doesn’t bother me that there is none in Eragon. (I hear that changes in the later books.) Eragon is filled with magic, secrets, mystery, trying to overthrow a tyrannical king; some over my favorite things!

I will say there were some details I kept waiting to be revealed, but I’m pretty sure they were only in the movie that shall not be named, and come into play in the later books. Overall, I can’t wait to continue with the series!

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Fifteen-year-old Eragon is plunged into an ancient war when he discovers a dragon’s egg while hunting to feed his family.

I first read ERAGON close to when it came out, which means I was probably 10-12 years old or so. I’ll be honest, I was not a fan…I found it dense and slow and a little weird, and for some reason remember being totally creeped out by the prologue. I gave it 2 stars.

I suspected I might appreciate this book more as an adult, and generally I was right. I still find it pretty dense and slow, but I can enjoy a slow burn fantasy now and I appreciated the depth of world-building here. I did need to switch to audio before this finally clicked for me…something about reading the physical copy just wasn’t snagging my attention. But overall, I had a reasonably fun time, and I’m excited to continue with the remaining books…I only made it as far as ELDEST on my original read, so I’m looking forward to learning how the series ends!

CW: Violence/blood/war/death; mentions of torture

A compelling start to series. Many things that occur in this book set up later events in the series.
