I love Eragon, and it is a joy to revisit this world that was so immersive to me as a kid. As an adult, I find Eragon a pretty annoying and immature character. I also think the writing reflects the authors age at the time that it was written. That said, even with those flaws, the world is immersive and just plain fun.

January 2024-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📖
It's been aging since I read this book and the series. I had a good time. The characters were good, the relationships were decent, the plot was enjoyable, and the writing was alright.

Original-⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Your namesake was the beginning, and now you are the continuation. Or the end."

I LOVED this book when it came out over 20 years ago and went into this reread expecting a similar experience to my 11-year-old self. But the book was slower than I remember, and I didn't understand why much of the wandering around was included. But this also means that I don't remember the series as well as I thought I had, which makes me even more excited to continue the reread? Idk. It's very complicated. Despite my mixed bag of reactions to this book, I am full-steam-ahead enthusiastic to read Murtagh after I get through the first four books!!!

Rereading this book for the first time since middle school and it sure isn’t very good, huh?

I definitely couldn’t have written a better book as a teen, to be clear, and I still find this story very entertaining and fun and generally engaging. Saphira is one of my favorite dragon characters ever. Murtagh is wonderfully compelling. Christopher Paolini’s descriptions are very lush (sometimes overly so). And if I continue rereading more of the series I know I’ll enjoy Nasuada and Roran’s sections.

The gender of it all is just as messy and sloppy as I remembered, and the handling of disability is definitely abysmal and I don’t recall it getting better.

The worldbuilding and plot are generally unoriginal, but I really don’t care because 1) I enjoy it and 2) again, the author was SO YOUNG when he wrote it. There are some very silly aspects of the worldbuilding, though. I definitely assumed that the Ancient Language was much more of a conlang as a kid than it actually is. So much of it is just kinda sloppy Latin with some Japanese thrown in I feel like? Goofy.

Anyway I think that we need more overly long silly fun dragon books.

I will be reading the rest of the series for sure. After reading a heavier fantasy series before this book, Eragon is a breath of fresh air. It’s certainly not without it’s sad/darker moments but it does have a lot of wholesome moments in and it has really captured my imagination. I enjoy the more blunt writing style and the characters are quite loveable (though not extremely fleshed out). The plot is good but it does fall into the fantasy trap of a lot of travelling that isn’t all that well justified in the story and sort of feels like for the sake of it. In all honesty it’s not a literary masterpiece but there’s something just so darn charming and captivating about this book. I’ll certainly be trying the next book in the series!

Eragon was not what I expected! It has a very different tone than Percy Jackson, but it was super charming! It had way more of a focus on Eragon’s feelings and relationships with other people/Saphira than I expected. Just a classic hero story with lots of heart!
Tbh it lost me in several places on the plot bc I was listening to it on audiobook and the plot was a bit generic, but the vibes were very good and heartwarming :3
