A bit disappointed about the number of illustrations (with just 2 double pages illustrations and a lot of sketches in black and white) but a high-quality book with a nice shiny paper and a sewn binding.

4 stars - It was really good

It has been twelve years since I last read this series and it was one that I read a lot as a teenager. This was one of the first series that I remember being excited for the new releases and getting them on/near release day because I needed to know what would happen next in the series. Well twelve years later and a woman in her 30s, I still enjoyed this book.

Eragon is a 15 year old farm boy who finds a dragon egg and has his life changed overnight. He finds himself hunting his uncle's killers, being hunted by the king, learning magic and sword fighting, and being thrown into the thick of many groups fighting to control him. A lot happens in this first book and while there are some slow parts I was still pretty hooked to the story.

While Eragon is only a 15/16 year old boy in this book, we do see a lot of character growth but he still makes mistakes. We still see him have teenage outbursts and his emotions get the better of him, which I think is good because he is a teenager and it would be weird if he wasn’t having any outbursts or issues.

My only issue with this wasn’t with the book itself, it was with the narrator of the audiobook. He made Saphira sound like a raspy yoda and it just isn’t what I was expecting for a female dragon. It made me laugh the first time she “spoke” and I just never got over how wrong her voice sounded.

Overall, I really enjoyed returning to this series. I have forgotten a lot of Eragon and Saphira’s story and I can’t wait to reread the rest of the series and see what happens next.

CW: death of a family member; grief; death of a friend; kidnapping, imprisonment, and torture; war and death;
