Ax ! Finally ! The team is now complete !
After a pretty dark book about Tobias and his issues with losing himself into his new hawk life, we have a Cassie book that explores the ethics of morphing... Said that way, it does not seem like a lot of fun, but our favorite Animorphs get to be dolphins and to make friends with whales... As someone that dreamt about studying the oceans as a kid, it's pure joy.
Also, I love that it goes into ethics territory. Those kids have to save the earth from a covert alien invasion, they have to make war... Yet, they try to do it by staying the good guys. They ask themselves questions that most adult professionnal armies don't. And that one of the reasons those books are so good...

The Animorphs series was a huge part of my childhood! Overall, all of these books were excellently written, and a fantastic book series to share with kids. They dealt with a lot of important themes, often dark, but in a relatable and easy to access way.
This book in particular was always one of my favorites! The first told from Cassie's perspective, this book also introduces Ax to the series, a beloved and much-awaited addition! I was excited to start reading Animorphs again, but chose to pick up the series here, just due to personal preference.
I love Animorphs, and would strongly recommend the series to anyone, especially those who love sci-fi, and its a great way to introduce kids to sci-fi, or to reading in general!

you know. this one's fine, not too standout. its mostly just here to provide us with our new bonus character, ax. the morphs were pretty cool - seagull were funny how they kept getting distracted, and dolphins were just neat, so powerful and smart but also playful. i also enjoyed the bit where cassie found out that whales are kind of psychic and just very mysterious wise beings?? and the whales save them multiple times
also they suffer their first horrifying injury! marco gets his dolphin tail bitten off and almost bleeds out :))) they're gonna get used to this eventually heheheh. it begins
cassie also gets a fun character reason beyond 'if we have the power i can't just stand aside' to fight the yeerks - according to ax, standard yeerk protocol is to basically extinguish biodiversity on every planet they conquer, and cassie won't stand for that

Not the best writing, with lots of tell instead of show. But hey, it’s a kids book. Joey enjoyed reminiscing and explaining the backstory to me. I’m not going to make a point to read any others, but I’m glad I tried it. And I can mark off a category on my Reading Challenge!

Great for furthering the plot, a little less exciting in the conclusion.
