Reviews with content warning for Infidelity - Heartburn

The narrator makes me think of the tv show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Short, easy read. The narrator is lovable, but most of the other characters are not.
It includes some words and opinions that would be offensive now but that were not out of the norm during the time the book was written.

Nora Ephron is one of the funniest writers I have ever had the privilege of reading, and I am inspired by how she imbues her stories with emotionality and humanity. Her turn of phrase is effortlessly hilarious and sardonic. I have never read a book that made me laugh out loud as much.

I would say about 85% of this book has aged beautifully. There are a couple questionable parts, but including a flagrant and obviously purposeful overuse of a sapphic slur. At the very least, even though presumably well intentioned, there is some lamp-shading there.

Overall, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. I absolutely adored this book.

Given the themes, an oddly light-hearted book, but not without it's moments of introspection. It felt a lot like having Sally Albright or Kathleen Kelly talking to me personally, I really liked the conversational style and especially loved the casual inclusion of the recipes. There was some interesting worldbuilding as well, such that I found myself wanting to check out Rachel's recipe books! It did get a bit confusing at times (gave me American Psycho vibes with the number of names and their related accolades) and there were some sections that haven't aged particularly well. Overall a quick and enjoyable read! (My copy also had a foreword from Nora Ephron, who had some fantastically cutting remarks about the double standard in the label "tiny disguised novel" as well as the ire she received for - shock horror - being an author writing about things that happened to her).
