More violent, disturbing, harrowing, and disheartening than the rest of the Hunger Games series- which is saying a ✨LOT✨

This book destroyed me. Tore me apart on a cellular level and then rebuilt me as a different person.

Sunrise perfectly encapsulates the feelings of dread, grief, and fear that have come to define today's world. This novel expertly uses the concept of propaganda to explore why corrupt governments are able to retain power over the many. Perhaps, most importantly, it reminds its readers that resistance in the face of evil is never in vain. That even if the changes accomplished today are small, they will help enable future generations to accomplish what we could not. The actions of the past are never meaningless, even if they will never be publicly known. Like Haymitch, we all must do what we can to paint our own posters and resist any attempts to control us for as long as we can.

Haymitch was not a perfect protagonist or a rebel hero. He was simply human. His emotional journey throughout Sunrise, and his capacity to blame himself for both real or perceived failings, grounded the plot in reality. Any of us have the capability to intervene when injustice is in front of us. To continue resisting even when it's been decided by broader forces that an example will be made of us. The fact that Haymitch only truly broke
upon returning to District 12 and losing the last of his love ones
speaks to his strong will. No one can blame him for ending up in the state we met him in come Hunger Games. Just existing, continuing to live despite everything, was Haymitch's greatest act of resistance.

Just because your acts of rebellion go unseen does not mean they didn't make a difference. Do not comply early. Remember that attempting to protect your loved ones, and yourself, will always be a noble cause. Cruelty cannot endure forever so long as people remain to fight against it.

Going back to the world of The Hunger Games is always a fun time. I was excited to read Haymitch's story but I also regret not having rewatched the movies beforehand like I would have liked. I wasn't lost because I know them well enough, but I still would have liked to get a refresher of characters.
Maybe it was just me, but I did feel like there were parts in this that felt more gruesome and violent than the past. Yes, the Hunger Games are always violent, but something about this felt even moreso. I had moments here where I found myself getting emotional for the characters. Unlike the original trilogy, Songbird and Sunrise don't have a lot of hope which can be hard to read. Collins is such an engaging author though, so you can't help wanting to read on and find out what happens next. I have more and more begun to appreciate Ballad of Songbird and Snake since I read it and the connections here were fascinating to me, I loved the sections where Snow appears. If you are a Hunger Games fan, a must read for you!

As always, Suzanne Collins continues to be one of my favourite authors. I feared as I got older, her books would no longer hold immense power, but I stand so great fully wrong. Everytime I pick up a book in this series I am reminded about the importance of the long game, the power of community, and the humanity in fear. I love her work, her message, and am so grateful she continues to add to the depth of this series.
