I hate to say it but I don’t think we needed this book. It was good and I liked the attention Collins gave to the government’s manipulation of media, but overall I don’t think it added anything new. It also felt like a sitcom where an applause track starts when you see a character or actor you recognize in that it began to feel stale. I liked it in a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” sort of way, but I wish we got to see Haymitch as a more unique character without comparing and sharing character arcs and traits with both Katniss and Snow. I liked the comparisons but at times it felt too much.

During one of the times I sat down to read this novel, I was sitting in my backyard trying to absorb sunlight. I heard a bird chirp and land on the nearest power line to my house. It was dove-colored. If my bird-loving partner was here, she could have probably identified what it was just from its voice.
I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be crazy if that was actually a dove?"
Returning inside, I looked up what a dove looks like. It was a dove. What the fuck???

I first read the Hunger Games books in elementary school. Haymitch was my favorite. I couldn't pick up on the historical or political undertones at the time, but even without that knowledge, the books were still massively enjoyable and inspiring to me.

As an adult, these books make my heart ache even more. You really don't realize how young the characters are until you are past that age yourself. You can't mirror the extreme emotions the characters go through about their loved ones until you experience what love really means to yourself.

Oh man, I knew I was in for a trip as soon as I recognized Lenore's name as an allusion to The Raven. Well, I knew that this book was going to be crazy way before since it's about Haymitch's life. Going in, you already know that he gets a good ending, but he has suffered through so much, like Katniss. Jeez, how he's suffered.

It was a delight(?) to see the return of Mags, Wiress and Beetee. It was a despair to learn about the existence of Ampert, the close proximity of Burdock and Asterid. I didn't even know (or remember that) they had names.

I'm not sure if I can even begin to express all my thoughts here. I have far too many. It's great. Read the damn book.

It was fun to go back to the world of hunger games and to get a glimpse into Haymitch’s back story. Tragic and beautiful. In the end, he finally helped put a stop to the reaping getting another sunrise. It’s cool to know what drove him.

I haven’t cried because of a book since I read Mockingjay and sobbed for the last quarter of it (or so). The exact same thing is happening again.
Absolutely sobbing as I quietly sang all the lyrics of Lenore’s song.

I feel physically ill. My head hurts. It’s past 2 AM. I’m staring at my copy of The Hunger Games and debating with myself if I should restart the whole series (I guess I’m a masochist).
I’m never gonna be able to look at a raven or a goose ever again.
Suzanne, you mad genius.
