Great addition to the Hunger Games series! It was intriguing to learn more of Haymitch's backstory. I see his character in the original series in a much different light now. This book made him even more tragic; I didn't know that was even possible.

I wondered what exactly led to Haymitch being the way he is in the original books, and yeah, that'll do it.
It was interesting seeing how different these games are compared to the ones in Katniss's time. There's technical advances since Songbirds and Snakes, but treatment of the Tributes is still quite harsh. There's a lot of symbolism at work in this book. I thought some of the messaging around propaganda was heavy-handed, but maybe that's due to it being YA. I found it engaging and was able to read it quickly, though it's hard to say if it was "enjoyable". Haymitch has so much heartbreak piled on top of him. The way that the truth is obscured not only in the Capitol but in the districts too is diabolical.

Outstanding origin story that explains as to how Haymitch became the jaded character we know from the original trilogy.
It is medium-paced at first, then becomes more fast-paced towards the middle of the book. I needed several days to emotionally recover from this book.
P.s. you get to briefly meet some more characters you already know from the original trilogy
Outstanding epilogue set post-Second Rebellion.

I was warned about crying while reading this book but truly I could not stop crying past the halfway point. I love this book. Suzanne did an amazing job connecting all of the other books to this one. I’m an absolute emotional wreck!
