Well…that sucked 😭

Not the book, just reading it.
Pure pain. Dammit Suzanne!!!

“She can’t keep getting away with this,” I said every time something bad happened.

We all must be masochists to want to keep reading this story knowing how it ends and the TORTURE these kids have to go through.

Let this be this gen’s 1984-style propaganda warning. Let this be this gen’s call to action.

You are not your government’s plaything. Don’t be a tool in their game.

I read this book in two sittings and now I need to sit and think about it for a while.

This did NOT need so many song lyrics, especially not songs we’ve already seen multiple times in  previous books and especially not a FULL EIGHTEEN VERSE rendition of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven in the last chapter 💀

Apart from that I like Haymitch’s narration style, I find it fresh and easy to read. Loved the epilogue.
Ampert
’s death scene
(skeleton)
was the most disturbed I’ve ever felt reading a hunger games novel.

Oh and also - if I was in the hunger games and I escaped the bloodbath and found a backpack
full of supplies, bottled water, potatoes and ‘a dozen’ apples
I would be way more grateful than Haymitch was wtf

Suzanne Collins says that she writes when current events compel her to... and well, I'm not surprised at this result. Do I credit the rise of fascism in America for gifting me this incredible book?

I loved how Collins frames character development in this novel, how the characters grow within the text but also how their development sets up the greater narrative of the series. I especially loved the tidbit about the geese, which shows up in the end of Mockingjay.

I was also particularly interested in the theme of propaganda that was riddled throughout the book, from the repetition of "NO PEACEKEEPERS, NO PEACE", to Lenore Dove's mischievous acts of rebellion, to the startlingly beautiful arena where poison lurked beneath every surface.

Chef's kiss, Suzanne Collins!

The best in the series so far. Sunrise on the Reaping adds so much to the world of the Hunger Games. The lore is deep and the story is captivating and devastating.

“I’ve only ever been in an automobile a handful of times…
Never when I couldn’t see out. Never when I was being taken to die. No light, no air. Like they buried me already.”

This. Book!

This was the hardest I’ve ever sobbed in a book, I swear I was full on sobbing, ugly crying for a full half hour 😭 that end!!!

We already know Haymitch won the 50th anniversary games - the one that had double the tributes. This is the story of how it happened.

And what a story!! It had me gripped, the characters were so strong and the villains were so cruel.

If you enjoyed the hunger games, I’d definitely recommend this.

“The snow may fall, but the sun also rises.”
