Reading this made me feel like I was in middle school again, sneaking books into class to read under my desk. This is wonderful and dark and sad and engaging in all the ways that remind me why I love to read so much.

I think this is the best written Hunger Games book yet. Just when you think she's done writing books in this universe, more horrible things happen in the world and she says, "You know what?! *thunks down new book* I'm not done!" And the faster we slip into fascism and heartless apathy to the suffering of others, the harder she goes with these books.

This one was a lot to take, especially in some parts, but it feels humanizing and important to read stories like this in times like these. It says, "Don't be callous, and don't look away."

I thought before that I was over HG books, but after this one, and with everything going on, I'm ready for another trilogy. Give me the war and into the first hunger games, girl. I am ready to be hurt again.

4.5/4.75??

This is a fantastic book! A great way of telling Haymitch’s story.

The games were written in amazing detail & I loved the other tributes from district 12. It really demonstrates the helplessness that you feel as one person against a broken system with setback after setback. It’s so easy to settle into feeling isolated and for the challenge to feel impossible. But Plutarch reminds us of perseverance, and Haymitch demonstrates his real strength and resilience when Katniss comes on the scene.

Maysilee first owning the pin, Burdock (Katniss’ dad) being an old friend, effie’s first stint, Mags and Wiress, Beetee too… it’s great to see how these characters have been working and struggling for years and for it to finally come to a head almost a quarter of a century later is eye opening. These things can take time. But we’re all in this together!

There was a little disconnect for me occasionally with big moments and sequences - not sure I could visualise those until after the fact. I enjoy reading really detailed passages, and Suzanne’s writing style is much more to the point, which is great for what this book needs, but just not my preference.

For example, with the interviews it was all a bit sudden and I couldn’t feel things bubbling as much as previously. Who knows.

I understand the connection between him and Lucy gray and Katniss - it’s interesting. But, mildly convenient for plot purposes? Who knows, but it’s nice to see old friends in those ways.

Not my favorite Hunger Games book, but definitely worth the read. This book focuses more on the themes of media shaping the narrative and just how cruel the regime can be, making you suffer personally without end. This book felt a little repetitive in what it showed and the easter eggs between Songbirds and Hunger Games were a little on the nose. Haymitch just kept suffering and suffering throughout the games and on his return home, making me wonder about the difference between him and Katniss and how President Snow treated them. Maybe more subtlety in the future? Haymitch was really clever and I loved seeing his character portrayed in that way.

What the fuck? You know what's going to happen and it devastates you anyway. Best in the series, my first 5 star read, this one is going to take some getting over. Going to read the entire series again just to really punch it home.

Do not read in public. Not even the start. None of it. I cried before the games began, I cried during the games, I cried after the games.
