It's an interesting prequel with great characters - most of whom are dead by the end, of course. I liked the deeper understanding we get for Haymitch (who is one of the best characters is the original trilogy imo), and it was cool to meet younger versions of beloved and hated characters like Effie. I also liked that we saw his games behind the scenes, but I was hoping for more in the epilogue about how he operated during the first and second books, how he eventually stepped up again to be a rebel.

A note on first person narration - I really enjoy reading (and writing) in first person POV/present tense, so I have been paying closer attention to how authors use it, whether it enhances or hinders the readers experience of the story. To get just a bit nerdy on tense usage, I will just say that I get distracted by too much present progressive (I am standing on the rock vs I stand on the rock, or even better, I stand on the rock, the jagged edges punching through the thin soles of my shoes). I just think there are more interesting ways to construct first person POV sentences without using too many participles.

Would buy: No
Would read again: No (but I'll watch the movie)
Would read next installments: Maybe
Would read more by this author: Probably

My favorite of the Hunger Games books, yet I've never cried so hard before!
Would definitely recommend (100000/10 stars)

I LOVED this. I just wish it had more Lenore Dove scenes.

I loved learning the background and earlier life of Haymitch Abernathy. He is such a sweet and lovable father figure for Katniss.

The only reason I give this anything less than a 5, which I have all other hunger games books, is because it took me incredibly long to get into and really enjoy. It’s so slow and kind of boring until the actual games, although the games itself were better than in TBOS&S. Unfortunately for it, the original trilogy and TBOS&S were interesting all-around.
