Beautiful emphasis of why Haymitch is Haymitch, laid out in a typical Hunger Games fashion book. Lots of suspense to build up the short chapters of the actual hunger games and all their horrors packed into a quick Timelapse. The ending was uplifting which was nice after wanting to cry.

This book delves more into how the games became what they were in the hunger games trilogy. It also develops some of the more questionable characters and adds backstory that makes them more human or at least understandable. 

This very much reads like just another hunger games, if messier. Much like how the 80’s/90’s were compared to current standard of safety and operations. I had hoped the storyline would extend past Haymitch’s games to the building of the revolution and a pov of training tributes and general life in the capital. But it doesn’t in any detail.

I also found the plot devices and certain characters to just be remakes of other plot devices and characters in the series. Only the small details changed, which I found disappointing. The amount of songs was also overkill and repetitive for my tastes; they just don’t translate well onto the written page.
