Every time Suzanne Collins saw a thirst trap of Coriolanus Snow, she opened her word doc and made Haymitch suffer a little bit more

I thought I knew what to expect going into Haymitch’s Games, considering I’ve already bared witness to 3 other iterations of the Games, and I knew how his ended... boy was I unprepared for everything that unfolded. There were dark details and twists that I did not see coming but that fit perfectly in place (i.e., Haymitch’s reaping, Louella/Lou Lou, Beetee & Ampert). Without giving any spoilers, we as readers have been victims of the Capitol’s propaganda ourselves in several ways. Haymitch’s Games reveal much about the characters we’ve grown to love (or loathe) over the rest of the series, color in backstories further, link what may have previously seemed like unrelated events & characters, and uncover the truth about pieces of Panem’s past we never thought to question.

I saw someone on TikTok discuss how ingenious it was that Collins didn’t use this prequel to expand the world she created, but to fill in missing pieces and connect the dots she already laid throughout the original trilogy and Songbirds & Snakes. I could not agree more with this analysis.

Collins does not pull punches with this book. It is forwardly dark and tragic in ways the previous 4 books were not. If you were somehow able to deny the series’ parallels to our own world, you simply cannot do that with this most recent (final?) installment. She metaphorically shakes you while screaming “pay attention and question everything”.

The original trilogy will always have a leg up on the prequels for me, but this book is excellent.

This is a fantastic prequel to the original Hunger Games Trilogy. Given its protagonist is Haymitch, the connections to the original books are very explicit. It’s basically the generation of Katniss’ parents with a few that are slightly older. This book even makes the other prequel “A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” a better book in retrospect. FANTASTIC

This was an incredible addition to the world of the hunger games giving depth to a District 12 tribute who is more than meet the eye at first glance when we met him in his drunken state in the Hunger Games.

Haymitch story is full of horror and tragedy but also love, family, and defiance.

Our boy lit the spark with his striker so our girl on fire could one day burn the capital down.

While he was not luck he was essential to the rebellion.

This hunger games was more gruesome in my mind then the other I still can't get the image of one of my favorite tributes' pearly white bones!

Suzanne once again only writing when she has something to say that is relevant to our own explores the dangers of propaganda, and the sinister tool it is for the powerful.
