Final Reaction: Suzanne Collins has a twisted mind. I mean that as a compliment of course. For too long, I lumped The Hunger Games in with other YA dystopian fiction. I read the original trilogy shortly after it came out but haven’t revisited the world since, and I forgot what a great writer Collins is. The world building is top notch, the writing is propulsive but not chaotic, and the characters are mostly complicated people. Since this is a prequel, there aren’t a ton of surprises, but she still manages to tug at the heartstrings. No wonder Haymitch is so messed up!

It’s probably best to read the original trilogy first, but even though it’s been almost 15 years since I read them, I had no trouble following the story.
