This was a good palate cleanser after only reading the most depressing ass books. But it isn't unbearable, unrealistically happy. Love.

Sometimes I ponderate if I'm losing interest in the young adult genre but I'm clearly not because books like this still exist.
This story is so important, I learned a lot and it kept me involved and eager to read. I really like the characters, found them very well-written and loved that it focuses on family and friendship almost or just as much as romantic love.

Everything changes for Ben De Backer when they come out to their family and non-binary. Now kicked out of their home, their only safety net is with a sister they haven’t seen in 10 years. A new plan set in motion to live the last semester of school as quietly as possible. But that goes down the drain when Ben meets Nathan, and an unexpected friendship slowly turns into something more.

Most books I have read this year seem to be healing some part of my younger self and this is no exception. Unlike Ben, I am lucky enough to have a supportive mom who despite not understanding at the time, she understood her duty was to support me no matter what. However, not all my relatives came to the same conclusions as her. Thus, the book's theme centered on family and our identities hit me hard. It was a reminder that while it's their choice whether to accept me, it's also mine whether I keep those relationships or not.

The way this book portrayed Ben's depression, anxiety, and gender dysphoria was so dear to me. It felt realistic, but it made it all the more painful. I know what it is like to be in that same place and I wanted nothing more than for them to get through it. And honestly, that's the best a book can do, having you wish the MC can get through it.

Nathan was a damn treat. I love his energy, and how extroverted and sweet he is. How he knew right away he wanted to be there for Ben even when they tried to push him away. He made my heart swell with how precious he was and I can't think of anyone better for Ben.

I would go out to consider this a slow burn, though. Which is not to its detriment. I do love me a good slow burn from time to time. My AO3 reads can tell you as much (no, I will not share my AO3 profile). It actually made sense for both characters and if it was rushed even slightly it wouldn't have felt right.

It's an emotionally tense read but with a glimmer of hope. You see Ben grow and find security in their identity as the story progresses. You see them go through such a dark period of their life but know things would get better, you want them to be better for them. It's a book for every Non-binary person, no matter what point in our lives. Whether it is when we first started questioning or after years of living out and proud. You will find a way to relate to Ben.

Sweet and enjoyable - I read it really quickly - but the plot was a bit nothing-ey. I'm sure this will be important to a lot of people because of the representation, and I'm very glad it exists. But honestly I'm wracking my brain for anything specific to say about it in a review and coming up empty which isn't a brilliant sign. I liked that the people with good intentions slipped up on pronouns and stuff occasionally - it felt realistic whereas I have seen sometimes in media where the "good" characters immediately get the hang of it and it just seems more than a little bit unrealistic. Anyway it was a relatively light (apart from that beginning), easy read which was what I needed.

This is the first book that accomplished to tear me up. Maybe because I read it in a very emotional moment idk. What I do know is that I couldn't put this down either. This is also the first book ever that I read in one sitting. Normally my brain does not have the attention span to read 100 pages in one sitting, but this book was so damn good I stayed up until 3 am just to finish it and fuck up my sleep schedule.
This book is so important and I am so thankful that it exist. Everything feels so real and very well described. As someone that experiences panic attacks myself, this is the first book where I can say 'yep that is exactly what it feels like'. I am in love with this book. This book deserves 6 ⭐️. It deserves everything. All I can really say is to please read this book because it handles so many important themes so very well. I honestly just can thank Mason Deaver that they wrote this and I will from now on read anything they will publish.
