Ohhhhhh my goodness, this book ♡
It had been on my tbr for a few years and I'd known how beloved and cherished this book is, especially among other nonbinary people. Now I know firsthand how special this book is 💛🤍💜🖤
This book hits you hard right from the very start, continues to give sucker punches, but then also builds you back up. Ben's story will be forever cemented into my heart I think.
I fell in love with the cast of characters who loved and supported Ben through everything. Nathan especially had my heart as a fellow bookworm and Pride & Prejudice fan lol

I am simply afraid of giving a book 5 stars for fear of ruining my own experience by putting it on a pedestal. Nonetheless, I regret how long it has taken me to finally read this masterwork novel. We'll start with the fact that it is centered on such a necessary story, of a young kid coming out as nonbinary to their family. I know a lot of people have agreed that coming out stories have become tired, but this is not the same as coming out as gay, this is a very specific experience that I imagine being a safe space for many teens (and adults) either processing their gender identity or needing to see more stories about nonbinary people. I would like to add that the story does not limit itself to Ben's nonbinary identity, but expands into family conflict, mental health issues, and a painstaking crush on someone that doesnt know you as your true self. I found myself relating to Ben's feelings of anxiety. I feel the need to state the obvious that even cisgendered people can appreciate this story and learn from it, and at times possibly relate. I loved having a small glimpse into the experiences of nonbinary teen and gaining some understanding the trans* experience just that little bit more through Ben's story.
While the context of the story is highly relevant and important, I feel inclined to congratulate the author on their magnificent writing. Deaver truly pulls emotion  out of the reader with their words, their language, their expression. At times I felt like I was with Ben, experiencing the anxieties and coping with drastic change and a new life. I cried multiple times while reading. Deaver expertly writes anxiety in a way that is understandable and relatable without being overwhelming or painful. I also love and appreciate that romance was at the center of the novel without being distracting or feeling disconnected. There is natural ease and fluidity with which it is written in the text that I absolutely adore. I'd like to thank Madon Deaver for writing this story, for sharing part of themself in the novel, and for doing it so beautifully.
