this was heartbreaking but also it put my heart back together so nicely. i cried a lot while reading, especially the scenes between ben and their parents. their parents are absolute TRASH, and it hurt to see them mistreat ben. there is a romance subplot (and it made my heart very happy!!), but it’s not the main focus.

⚠️: transphobia, panic attacks/disorders, homophobia, emotional abuse, abandonment, child abuse, religious bigotry, disordered eating, grief, mental illness, dysphoria, suicidal thoughts

This is probably the best book I’ve read in 2023 so far. The diversity is *chef’s kiss*. Ben’s character made me feel so seen. Their struggles with identity are similar to my own struggles and I really appreciate the dive into the difference between sexuality and gender-identity. I knew from the first 50 pages this book was going to be inspiring and emotional. I was right. This book had me crying and I felt “seen” by the book.

One of the first books I've read with MC enby rep! Loved Ben's story and felt so seen by some aspect of each character. This book felt so human and raw and I loved every minute of it. But yeah I did cry a lot on Syd's couch LOL

Reread on audio this time around. Still one of my favourites. The anxiety rep is really good. I need a Hannah and Thomas in my life

dont get me wrong, if this books main message was the representation of discovering identity and coming out as non-binary in ben’s situation, it was perfect.
but some of the side plots were a wee bit off to me, ben’s relationship with nathan felt quite unrealistic to me, and after getting used to ben’s personality, then them randomly bringing out the jokes after not wanted to even talk to anyone felt a little ehhhhh? you know, it felt like it wasn’t them

i did love the representation in this book very much, and i feel like its a very good book for non-binary or trans youth to read, but if representation isn’t what you came for, i feel you won’t like this book

love this book, there arent many books with a nonbinary main character, let alone a nonbinary love story. this book is definitley very entertaining and i reccomend it to anyone looking for a good lgbtq+ coming of age story. can get a bit cheesy/cliche but the story is still good.
