This is the first book with a non-binary character that I've read and I learned a lot about what it means to be a non-binary. And for that reason alone, I was able to finish the book.
I really think it is a very important story and representation however, I felt the writing is a bit tedious, the conversations between characters felt forced and obviously scripted. I also find the development of the characters very passive and aside from Nathan and Mariam, I feel like the other characters in Ben's friend group are simply fillers in the story. But Nathan is such a sweetheart so definitely worth the read.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a YA book with a non-binary person as the lead character. So of course when I heard about this debut from Mason Deaver I was like I NEED THIS NOW. I’ve followed Mason for a few years now on twitter so I’ve been excited for this book for a while.
Content warnings: misgendering, homophobia, enbyphobia, anxiety, depression, being kicked out of home
I Wish You All The Best follows Ben De Backer after they come out as non-binary to their parents. They have been thrown out of their home and all that’s left for them to do is to phone their estranged sister. She takes them in and Ben has to start at a whole new school, make new friends and find a whole new life.
This book is so stunning. It both made me happy and broke my heart. There is no other word for this bar “Groundbreaking”. With so few books out there even featuring non-binary supporting characters, this book from ownvoices author Mason Deaver is incredibly important.

So many things about this book resonated with my own experience coming out to my parents and finding my own family, even though it wasn’t biological. I have never been able to relate to a book as much as I was with this one. Knowing that a fellow nonbinary person wrote it and didn’t sugarcoat anything is also such a great feeling. THIS is the book I needed when I was a kid, and I still needed it now.

I really enjoyed this book! Looking back on my youth as a queer person, I think this book really resonates with me and definitely would have at the time. Deaver does a great job building a cast of characters, even those who don’t get a ton of screen time. My only complaint is that I wish we got to see a bit more of these relationships developing but I understand why not.

Extra star for representation, but the characters and dialogue were flat.

This was just the book I needed. I've been struggling with focusing on reading, but this book brought me in and made me care about Ben quickly. It's heavy, but I definitely felt that it's a needed story to be out in the world. I'll be sitting here, wishing I could see Ben's paintings still.
