I continously am debating, even still, on to give this 2 or 3 stars. I settled with 3, but I don't think I am itching to read the other books in this "Bright Sessions" universe.
Warning: some spoilers included -
Pros:
1. Interesting read that had me thinking of the potential that is had to expound upon this universe set in this novel
2. I like the different dynamics and descriptions of emotions. Describing a color to a physicality of emotions kept things interesting
Cons:
1. Slow pacing. I felt things kept dragging on and when we ran to a major plot point or character development, it fell flat. Ironic considering the entire basis of this novel is regarding an atypical empath learning about his and others feelings/emotions
2. Characters were likeable, but the lack of creating further depth prevented me from fully immersing into their complexities. I felt like a thirst unquenched after reading the final page because I wanted there to be more.
3. This book pulled out a lot of its interesting plot points and interesting side characters, right at the end. Yup. And you guessed it, fell flat and made it feel it wasn't important.
I guess my biggest issues is that I truly wanted to care more about Caleb and Adam. I loved we had both sides of a coin: an atypical who senses others emotions and is trying to learn how to slow down when communicating them - to someone who drowns under a depression and doesn't know how to always best process his feelings and verbalize them. But, it felt like I was reading just a surface level overview of the plot's narrative. It just felt.. unfinished?
I totally get why some may be heavily drawn to this book. Trust me, I wanted to. I also understand there was a podcast that involved the characters and set more foundation to this world - and I have not listened in to a single episode. But, this just wasn't for me and I feel disapointed.
