This was very much not the book I expected, and wow is it wonderful for it. Tiamat's Wrath takes an early turn that makes perfect sense and yet one which I did not see coming. It's a natural follow-on in the universe they've built, and yet I did not see it coming. I'll grant it's also been explored by other sci-fi properties before

Mass Effect played with a variation on this to great effect

, but it's done particularly well here. The emotional punches were also perfectly on point. I'm looking forward to seeing how they manage to finish this series out, because they've set themselves up with the highest expectations.
