I struggled to follow this as I could not get into some of the narrators voices (mainly Tristan, but Reina's voice for the plants was awful too 🤣)

The ending definitely was not what I was expecting.

I think I would have enjoyed this more had I read the book as opposed to listening to it!

I'll start at the beginning. I read very very VERY few young adult books. The reason is mostly due to my personal feeling that many of them use the plot as an excuse for overdone romance, or romantic banter that makes me cringe, or just characters that I don't quite identify with as I'm in my 30's. The teenage banter at the beginning and then a third of the way through the book, are my sole reason for giving this book only 4 starts.

That said, WOW what a book. I had heard the name before and then a friend I trust recommended it to me as a dark academia dealing with some complex themes and pretty good character development. So that's exactly what this is. A debut of an excellent author who isn't afraid of going deep into topics such as mortality, loyalty, the power and price of knowledge etc.

The six initiates to the Alexandrian society were believable, naïve and then connected enough into what was happening to make this a great story. This was my first even audible listen and the different narrators' did an absolutely fantastic job (especially the grass- read and you will find out) bringing all the characters to life. Trystan, Parise, Reina, Libby, Nico and Cullum put together quite a team that balanced itself out nicely. These and some plot twists mixed in have piqued my interest and I'll definitely be looking out for book 2!
