I absolutely loved this book. I actually hesitate to even call it only a "book", because it is so much more than that. It really is more of a process, and a process that will transform your life, if you allow it.

The Desire Map really made me look into myself, and figure out what I wanted from life, and how to go about getting it... all based on how I truly want to feel.

LaPorte is a wonderful, real, and caring writer... and her passion for her project really translates through her writing.

This is a work book, it is designed to lead you to self-discovery, expect to journal and come back to the questions several times.

A little too spiritual for my liking, however some of the exercises in the second half were still thought provoking

The Desire Map is part reflection, part rah-rah feel-good power amp-up, and part workbook. I got a lot out of each piece, although there were places that felt less relevant or helpful to me (e.g., a whole section on spirituality when that's just not who I am). But that's nitpicking LaPorte's process and philosophy, which is separate from whether or not The Desire Map is a good book. And it is, and it's worth a read for anyone who likes to goal-set and has been pondering what that really means. I could've really used this book about a year ago.

I want so badly to give this book three stars, but the more I consider it, the more I just can't justify it. How does this book boast an overall 4+ star rating?

I like the premise--LOVE the premise, in fact, of determining your core feelings and building your goals to feel those feelings. Alas . . .

I listened to this on audio and had a really, REALLY tough time with her speaking. She sounded like a stereotypical new-age therapist, and I'm not even talking about the writing yet. I mean her voice and the way she speaks. Very breathy, pausing every few words, even where no pause is needed. I don't buy into divinity on pretty much any level, so I had a very hard time connecting with a lot of the questions, and I flat out refused to answer questions like, "What is the shape of confidence?" and "What is the smell of connection?"

I didn't connect with many of the questions, so the exercises she brought us through often left me with holes a mile wide and feeling like I was missing something. Maybe I'm not feminine enough for this book to work for me. I consider myself to be an intense feeler and also far better than the average joe at being able to put into words not only what I'm feeling, but why (even men get it when I explain my emotions, and I think that's saying something). So why then did this exercise leave me with the feeling of being out of the loop?

I get the appeal of this book, especially the audio, for women, but it felt far too hokey in far too many places for my liking.

One of the most influential books I have ever read. Even after 3 months, I continue to work on how I want to feel and my core-desired feelings are driving my life.

I love the perspective offered by this book: it really gave me a lot to think about, and offered up some insights I hadn't thought about. While there IS a goal setting element to the author's methods, it's not so much about achievement of things that may or may not even be within your control as it is about achieving an emotional state, a mental state, that can lead to happiness and fulfillment. Thought provoking and hopeful.

For me the value in this book was the last sections with the concrete worksheets. The format, beginning with probing, specific questions before moving into more broad thinking about areas of my life worked really well in helping my core desired feelings emerge organically. The first part of the book was familiar self-help platitudes which I personally found superficial and ended up skimming. (Side note - the varying font sizes within sections in the e-book version was distracting and got to be really annoying.)
