Okay, so... that was a ride. I'm not gonna lie, I was heavily confused for the beginning portion of this graphic novel but the further I read, the more complex and intricately layered the book became which made it digestible and made the slow pace thrilling. I'm always going to be down for stories with anti-capitalist themes that explore the moral failings of billionaires/the deadly nature of greed. It reminded me of season 1 of Kollok1991 on YouTube with all of the Mammon talk and flesh payments (highly recommend Kollok btw, it's such a great TTRPG).

Really interested in seeing where this is going. Hickman is great in how he writes I'd even recommend to non-comic readers most of his stuff.

eh. seems like JH had one cool idea and then..... did nothing with it. (unless you count the charts, which are way less useful than in other works of his.)

Hickman at doing what he does best, spinning a web so large while only showing you a thread at a time. I enjoy Hickman’s writing as it is complex and gives me a sense of being in the situation with the characters. This is no different. Great writing and I can’t wait to read the rest.

I read the first 3 issues independently, but having it all together made for much better reading. I love the detective, and how smart he is. I love Gregoria and how ruthless she is, how she pieced it all together as a kid, and what it all amounted to. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

This was AWESOME. Tying together magic and economics is not something I thought would work, but this book made it smart and believable (if a bit hard to understand, but I think that's less because of my lack of knowledge of economics and more because this is only the first volume and they aren't giving everything away up front).
I 100% recommend this to comics readers, horror fans, to people interested in capitalism's decline or the current place Wall Street holds in our society... I will definitely read volume two and can hardly wait to have it in my hands. This might be a series I start reading in single issues.

The economy but with mammon. Only Jonathan Hickman could not only make a concept like that work, but make every characters motivation compelling.

Image comics really are one of the best graphic novel publishers out there at the moment. Their writers and artists are absolutely top notch and this series looks like it's going to be one of their best.

Over time I can see this series having an enthralling story with character you latch to and others you wish the worst for. The issue I found was that this first volume takes 90 percent of the time setting the stage and introducing the cast of characters, but not enough time giving you a strong story arc and a purpose to the characters. So by the end my interest was peaked but I don’t have enough to desire to push forward. The presentation was great and the art was dark and sinister matching the story’s tone perfectly. If I was given more story to sink my teeth into I think I would feel compelled to push forward immediate. For now I will shelve the second volume and possibly come back to it on a rainy day.
