Because he is the seventh son of a seventh son, and somewhat to his dismay, Tom Ward, starts his apprenticeship with the County Spook. It’s a lonely trade tramping from one end of the county to another driving off or binding “ghouls, boggarts, and all manner of wicked beasties." And being shunned by the people you help because they want to stay as far away as possible from such supernatural evil, and from you because you attract it.

This is a nicely scary story, but the decision to have the narrator use an American accent for Tom while all the other characters speak with a northern English one is puzzling.
