This is not a serious book with a very specific type of humor, and you'll either love it or hate it. David Sodergren is a fantastic writer, combining tension and suspense with over the top gore and humor. The author riffs off so many folk horror tropes, and you can really see his love of the genre. I can't emphasize how ridiculous this book is, but I loved every page of it. Don't recommend if you're squeamish, but it's a must read for anyone who loves tongue in cheek campy splatterpunk type horror. I'm officially a Sodergren stan.

My first slasher read and I liked the idea a lot, and I loved Beth and her eventual sympathy for Maggie.
Ughhhh I wanted the ending to go her way but I get the twist ending.
The disgusting small town is always a good vibe,
and a lot of moments did have me tense up. I’m looking forward to reading some of this author’s other books.

I really enjoyed The Haar by this author, primarily because it had a lot of heart and sweet moments between the main characters. I felt that Maggie's Grave was unfortunately missing this level of character development. While I found it to be a somewhat enjoyable, fast-paced adventure to read, and I'm usually a sucker for stories about witches (or women accused of being witches), I just don't think this one was quite for me.

The plot and characters were very trope-y and one-dimensional, and it felt like a B-movie slasher film in a book, which is not often the type of horror I gravitate towards. I get that Sodergren was attempting to juxtapose violence and... humor... but I don't really think
a man getting destroyed anally by a monster crawling through the toilet pipe
is... funny. It made me feel like I was reading a story written by a teen boy who was SUPER excited to come up with just nasty, nasty imagery, like
an orgy of murderous older adults, people getting blown to bits, and a guy getting his penis ripped off.

I will give some points back for Sodergren finding a way to shoehorn in mentioning a pug, though!

In 1657 poor Maggie Wall was tortured and killed for the crime of being a witch, her unborn baby brutally cut from her womb, before she was buried alone near the top of a mountain. With her dying breath Maggie promised revenge on the town of Auchenmullan. Over 300 years later, Maggie is searching for her beloved baby and she is intent on destroying anybody who gets in her way.

Maggie’s Grave is a gruesome, gory rollercoaster of a book, packed full of graphic and depraved death scenes and unnerving creature descriptions, this novel is anything but boring. Highly recommended for anybody looking for a fun, spooky and slightly disturbing read.

Overall I thought it was a great, fun horror: it was dark, unsettling, gory, emotional and twisted. The ending single handedly bumped this .5 stars. The characters were realistic and MESSY, low-key hated everyone but in a fun way. The humans were just as horrific as the actual monster which I ADORE in a book. I will say I tended to find myself skimming often but thats just a ~me~ issue I think. It's not a game changing book and I might not think about it often but I certainly enjoyed it!

I didn’t enjoy most of this book. I think the aim for shock value was too much and it’s like the gore was overkill. Unusual ending though.
