This is an incredible book - I couldn’t help reading it all in a couple of sittings. It’s full of suspense and takes you along various emotional rollercoasters. It’s written in first person making it even easier to empathise with the private investigator and the victim. The ending is especially juicy and certainly not disappointing

The Wrong Woman is a book that is going to make you wonder about the “wrong” woman amidst all the women of the book.

A friend of mine lent this to me after discovering the author J.P Pomare in a street library. Set in a small American town this is a dual narrative between former police officer turned private investigator Reid and the victim of a car accident he is investigating. While Reid narrates after the crash, the female victim narrates what happened leading up to it. Both characters have a complicated relationship with the small town after being the focus of different scandals there over the years. While Reid has been employed by the insurance company to ensure the accident was just that, he finds himself drawn to the case of two missing young women that is preoccupying the towns people and local police. Could this incident and the accident be connected? This is a competent thriller with some good twists towards the end. The characterisation felt a little cliche, despite trying to offer something different through Reid's homosexuality, but the plotting was strong. The tense atmosphere slowly rises throughout, and the writing is effective in achieving this.

I devoured this book in a day - well, less than a day since it was a working day.

Reid is hired by an insurance firm to head back to his hometown and investigate a car crash that killed a man and put the deceased’s wife in a coma. At the same time, the town is reeling from the disappearance of two young women. The accident and disappearances don’t seem related, until Reid does some digging.

This book alternated between the voices of Reid and Eshana, the woman in a coma. I honestly had no idea where the book was going, but it kept me on edge right until the last page. I found Reid to be a likeable protagonist, and I genuinely cared what happened to him. The chapters were short and didn’t drag on, and the length of the book was perfect.

I’ve never read J.P Pomare’s work before, but you better believe I am going to be searching through the back catalogue.

This was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me.

Thanks @hachetteaus for my #gifted copy.

the wrong woman is the first book i’ve read by pompare. i’ve discovered he’s an excellent writer of mystery, using the right amount of suspense to keep you hooked.

this book starts out as medium paced, and dips in the middle. the ending is very quick. i only wish is was consistently faster, rather than the boring bit in the center.

our main character, reid, was a relatable guy. i found him interesting, and his past somewhat complex. i really loved how he was queer, as it’s something that not a lot of mysteries include.

throughout the book, we’re constantly guessing what’s going to happen next, only to be wrong. i loved this, as i enjoy the twists when something unexpected happens. the ending had a major twist what was so unexpected, it took me a few minutes to really think about how it all worked out the way it did.

overall, the wrong woman kept me on my toes for the most part. it was an exciting read with a lot of fresh ideas.
