I have a lot of conflicted emotions with regards to this book. The character death at the beginning felt a lot like a plot device, and knowing what I did about this individual from the previous series I found their death a little out of character.

I like our new cast, and am glad it looks like we’ll be seeing more of this world than we did in the previous series. I’d recommend reading the original series before this one if only because I enjoyed it more, but that could change as this series progresses.

This is the first novel I've read by Cinda Williams Chima. I know, I know where have I been? Under a rock obviously!

Flamecaster set me into a new world I hadn't been introduced to prior so I think for me it definitely took some time to wrap my head around certain things. It took me a little longer to read this. It wasn't until about page 250 that I really started flying through it. That's when things got interesting for me. I could definitely tell from the beginning that it would be a slow build. I do wish I read the other series prior to this one first. But the cover art on this book gave me serious heart eyes.

We are thrown into the world of the seven realms, where there is magic, Kingships and Queendoms, and possibly a dragon. We go between our main characters POVs Ash and Jenna. But we also get to have glimpses of two side characters, Lila and Destin. They seem to have their own past and I can't wait to know more about them. Ash and Jenna are both looking for revenge for different reasons, but both reasons involve the murderous King of Arden. Their paths don't cross until nearly the end of the book. But when they do somethings shifts and sparks fly. Then there are some great twist and turns and a definite to be continued!

She did a great job with this YA fantasy. I appreciated that it wasn't centered on a romance or love triangle. Although I wasn't really overjoyed about the insta love that happened with Ash and Jenna. Frankly I found myself wanting more of Lila. But maybe this will happen in the follow up novel which I can't wait to read.

Okay. I had to reread this one before starting with the sequel and then the rest of the books in this series. I didn't remember a single thing from this one, except some references to the Seven Realms series. But now I'm up to date and ready for #2, Shadowcaster!!

And yikes, I just love Chima's writing and her storytelling. I don't have any bad critique for neither the characters, the storyline or setting or anything. This book is simply brilliant.

Great book; fun read. Not as well put together or as spectacular as the primary series.

[3.5 stars] I’m not even gonna play w/ y’all, the only reason this rating is so low is bc there was no Raisa and almost no Han for all 535 pages
