Nicole Lundrigan knows how to create a mood.
I previously read The Substitute and absolutely enthralled me. And provided twists I didn't know needed twisting.
An Unthinkable Thing was no different. I whipped through it in two nights.
Thomas Ware is 11 years old in the summer of 1958. His world is turned over when his aunt Celia, who raised him since birth, is found murdered.
He is taken to live with his mother Esther, who has been a domestic servant for the elite Henneberry family for many years.
When the Henneberrys are shot and killed, Thomas is the one charged with murder.
I loved this book. Nicole Lundrigan's dark literary fiction is note-perfect and she knows how to set a thoroughly unsettling scene.
Chapters are interspersed with court testimony and forensic reports, giving us information on the crime to which we are still reading the lead-up.
The story is told from Thomas's POV, giving us a unique take on a most unnerving household.
 Recommended!

This book is an absolute masterpiece. The narration of 11-year-old Thomas was perfect for this story. I loved the use of court records/police reports in between chapters. It helped to build up the mystery of the story while also allowing me to make my own speculations. I was absolutely not prepared for the ending, but those people got what they deserved.
The writing itself was very well-done and the characters and their personalities well built. There was a discomfort present with some of the characters despite not knowing the reasons that really helped the story along. Tommie was such a good person and a good narrator for this book.
This was an excellent read and I highly recommend it.
