Boring, slow, poorly written, disjointed flow, choppy sentences. Forced myself through it in hopes of a good conclusion. Not sure why this author is considered good.

This is great start to the Psy-Changeling Trinity series/a great continuation of the Psy-Changeling series. Featuring cold-as-ice psy, Silver Mercant, head of the EmNet (the global emergency and humanitarian network) and Valentin Nikolaev, the powerful, friendly alpha of a clan of bears in Russia, this is grumpy-sunshine romance to the max. I thought that even without context of having read the Psy-Changeling series, the build up of the stakes in this new trinity society was excellently done. I obviously think the book is better and the reading experience richer if you’ve read the preceding series because you will already have context with the characters and how things got to this point, but I think it may be possible to start with this book. As someone who has read all the previous books, this is definitely a 4.5-5-star book for me. The depth of emotion and self-sacrifice between Valentin and Silver is amazing, the building and transition of their love story is wonderful, the conflict and tension and narratives about family and hurt and familial love are exceptionally written. If there is one minor quibble, it’s that some of the transitions between cold Silver and warm Silver were a little clunky and out of nowhere but not in a way that was unbelievable because of Val’s persistence. Also, some people may be sensitive to the “persistence of bears” theme because it can also be interpreted as a lack of respect for boundaries and consent or a sort of harassment when someone has disavowed a desire for a relationship with a potential suitor. I personally didn’t read it this way and this certainly made Silver’s transitions believable, but I can see how someone may be sensitive to this aspect of the book and could justifiably feel “a way” about it.

I could hardly put this down. This is definitely one of my favourite books in this entire Psy-Changeling-Human world so far.
