This book was a DNF at 125 pages for me. It was way too slow and depressing and barely a mention of magic at that point. I didn't see how it could get any better and just got fed up. Also, I found it frustrating to have a main character who was mute.

So this month I discovered Paula Brackston, and have devoured nearly every book she has written. I've discovered another auto-buy author. So far I've really enjoyed the themes she employs in each novel. (Think witches, Welsh mythology, and magical landscapes.) The Winter Witch definitely delivered. It was such an intriguing story, I couldn't put it down.

DNF. Couldn’t, the constant downs and the basic plots and ugh.

Brackston knows what she is doing. Exactly the book that you would expect it to be. A bit of a slow paced, classic 'young witch finding her power' and being 'not like other girls' type of story. The Welsh countryside is like another character. Will is suprise you? Probably not. Will it make you want start calling people 'cariad'? Probably

There were parts of this story that I liked very much, but other parts dragged. It was one of those stories that could have been told with about 100 less pages. I liked the characters and the overall storyline, but it was very predictable.

This was a slow burn, but as someone with Welsh heritage and my own little corgi, it was a sort of comfort this winter. The only reason I'm not rating it higher is, despite lots of emotional things taking place, I found this book was written in such a way that I didn't personally feel those impacts as well, even though I should have.
