Things We Hide From The Light by Lucy Score

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

Genre: Romance

About 575 pages

After losing the competition for a dream girl to his brother, Knox, and being shot, Nash is struggling with his mental health. He feels like a shell of himself and is having trouble coping. Insert Lina… She’s a firecracker of an insurance investigator and challenges Nash in more ways than he could ever imagine. She is stubborn as hell and annoys the crap out of him, but oddly enough being around her soothes Nash’s anxiety. Eventually, the two come to a mutual agreement to help each other solve their respective cases and have some fun along the way😉 What could go wrong?

I liked this book but would definitely rank TWNGO higher. Lucy Score’s writing is easy to read and the spice level in this book was 🔥. However, I had two main issues. One, the story was way too similar to TWNGO. Two, I think Score moved the romance along too quickly between Nash and Lina. We never really saw them interact in book #1, yet it was 🔥🌶️ from the start. So I missed the build-up/foundation that was given to Knox and Naomi…. One more Knockemout book to go and it may be the one I’m most excited for. Lucian and Sloane have intrigued me from book #1 and they seem to have a past we don’t know about that I can’t wait to learn more about.

Favorite Quote: “Heaven and hell intertwined, turning pleasure into an exquisite torture. I wouldn’t survive this. But I already knew I couldn’t survive without her.”

CW: PTSD, gun violence, kidnapping, panic attacks, addiction (recounted), violence, domestic abuse, alcoholism (recounted), racism, police brutality, parental abandonment (recounted)

Following the success of Lucy Score's first book in the Knockemout series,  Things We Never Got Over, Things We Hide from the Light focuses on Nash Morgan as he falls for Knox's best friend Lina when she comes into town for work.

I don't know why, but in some ways I think I like Things We Hide from the Light better than Things We Never Got Over even though I gave them both the same rating as well as they are both equally good.

One of the things I really like about Things We Hide from the Light is the improved writing style that Score implements for the second book in the series. There's much more of an improvement in character development and you get to understand more of Nash and Lina's backgrounds as well as how it influences their relationships with others. You also get more honest discussions about mental health and the importance of seeking help, which I really appreciate. Additionally, I think the plot twists have improved since Things We Never Got Over and it balances the conundrum of not seeing it coming while also having it make sense.

Both of them are really good MCs and I enjoyed seeing their relationship unfold on-page (though, I personally wish it's less spicy). I think Score does a great job with focusing on their relationship while also getting some "where are they now" from characters featured in  Things We Never Got Over

For those of you looking for a romance novel with small town grit, you are going to like the second book in Score's Knockemout series.

I liked Nash and Lina a lot more before I could read their thoughts.

⚠️ CW: gun violence, mental health, PTSD, medical trauma, grief, drug abuse and addiction ⚠️ Lucy Score has got me hook, line and sinker again! 👏🏼 This book takes us back to the small town of Knockemout but this time it follows Nash Morgan, the good guy chief of police and brother to bad boy Knox, who after being shot in the line of duty is struggling mentally with severe panic attacks and nightmares and feels like a shell of the man he once was but he refuses to let anyone know. This is until his new neighbour, Lina, and old time friend of Knox's sees through his facade. She's smart, sexy and not a fan of physical contact unless she initiates it but she soon finds out that Nash's touch is different and he feels it too. The connection between them is immense, it makes Nash feel alive and makes Lina worried that she can't resist exploring the risk. But Lina has secrets of her own and if Nash finds out the real reason she's in town he'll never forgive her. And even though she doesn't do relationships she knows that Knockemout has a way of getting under people's skin. This book was so, so good and gave me everything I wanted from the sequel to TWNGO!! I loved the good guy falls for the bad girl trope more than I thought I would and tbh I love a man in uniform so 'those scenes' were 🥵. I also really loved seeing a new side to Nash and getting to know him more as well as continuing to see the lives and goings-on of our favourite Knockemout residents. And just like with the first book I cannot wait for the next one! Overall, I highly recommend this book.
