This book's amazing. If you like pirates, it's a must-read. I used it for my A-Level History Personal Assignment (my question being, 'To what extent were the governments of the time responsible for the upswing in piracy in the 16-1800s?'). It was hugely useful and gave me pages and pages of notes.

But enough of that: What's important is that it's INTERESTING. Talty really did his research, and anyone who has read or is planning to read Exquemelin's 'Buccaneers of America' might consider buying this to help them discern the truth from the things Exquemelin put in to make the book sell more, as Talty goes through it with a fine tooth-comb. All in all, a fantastic book which really entertained and informed.

Interesting and definitely a page-turner, although it felt somewhat sensationalized. In addition, I didn’t enjoy the author’s imagined pirate Roderick, whom he used to provide a “common soldier” perspective. It was fine at first, but when he described Roderick attending Morgan’s funeral, I felt he was stretching credulity a bit.

Good history of Port Royal and Morgan’s involvment in it. A few differences from other histories of the city that I’ve read, and I wasn’t a fan of the author’s literary move of ‘Rodrigo’, but well written and researched with the connections back to European politics of the time that defined the city and events in the Caribbean.

Picked up for a work project. Reads like an action movie. Very very good.

Excessively detailed, very well researched. Sometimes it was a little dry, mostly when the author had to veer off of the pirates' exploits to explain Spanish politics. Otherwise a great read.

There is nothing here that I don't like -- maritime history? Piracy? Yes! Towards the end, though (as is the case with so many books), Mr. Talty sort of falls into the trap of what feels like padding with an overabundance of military strategy. Not that I'm not interested -- I am! -- but some sections felt sort of irrelevant.
