Our last resort - Clemence Michallon @clemencemichallon
Thanks @netgalley & @elliottandthompson for the ARC!

📖 About:
Fifteen years after escaping a cult, siblings Frida and Gabriel reunite on vacation at the luxurious Ara Hotel. But when a young woman is found dead and the resort goes into lockdown, Gabriel becomes the prime suspect. As the investigation deepens, Frida must confront memories of their past and the secret they swore to keep, in a tense story that alternates between past and present, building to a shocking finale.
✅ REVIEW:
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, as well as the character development and setting. I’m usually not a fan of time jumps in novels, but Clémence handled them very well. The story kept me entertained; the final reveal felt a bit predictable to me, but overall the plot was very enjoyable. Toward the end, I would’ve preferred a different path to keep the tension higher, but it was still a satisfying read. I will check her other book!

I rated this three stars, as the storyline was quite ambitious and progressed smoothly. However, I found the ending to be somewhat underwhelming, and I must admit I felt a sense of relief that it had concluded.
I’m a bit torn on how to review Our Last Resort. It’s a very slow burn, almost hypnotic in its pacing and language. That rhythm pairs well with the luxury desert setting, where a sense of danger quietly undercuts the beauty and glamour.
This is juxtaposed with flashbacks to Gabriel and Frida’s past, growing up in a cult. Those scenes were intriguing and haunting, and I was completely caught up in their story and the unique nature of their relationship.
However, the connection between past and present felt more tenuous. By the end, I still didn’t have a clear sense of Gabriel and Frida’s relationship in the now. The slow build and simmering suspense felt like it was leading to a big twist, but that moment never quite arrived.
That said, I did enjoy it. The prose was atmospheric and haunting at times, and there was something mesmerising in the effortless way it moved between timelines. It felt more drama than thriller, and I flew through it in a day, enjoying the ebbs and flows of their journey.
I’d recommend for anyone looking for an engaging and atmospheric slow burn suspense.

I liked this better much more than The Quiet Tenant. That one felt like a gimmick and had a lot of details that I thought simply implausible.
I thought the flashback scenes with the cult were really interesting and a good view into the magnetism of cult leaders.
I thought basically everything involving the police was pretty bad. I don't know anything about actual police procedures but all of it seemed to not make any logical sense.
At the end, when Frida is caught breaking into the guy's car, and finds the bloody shirt as proof that he killed his wife - I mean, she 10000% tampered with evidence. I don't think that would be at all admissible and then the guy just confesses? After doing all the cool planning to plant evidence on Gabriel and frame him - he just breaks down? And the police, after being so untrusting of Frida and Gabriel, suddenly decide, oh yeah we should trust the woman who just broke into this guy's car? I found that all completely unbelievable.
That being said, this was a compelling read.
