I knew I would love Alice Oseman's novels, but I didn't realize I would love them this much! The story here was so unique and well-told, and the characters were fully formed and painfully relatable. I sped through this book (with a couple week's break...) because I couldn't put it down. I loved how diverse the characters were, it added so much to the story. The ending was much more tense and sad than I had expected, and things wrapped up a little quicker than maybe they should have, but overall it was a fantastic ending and made a lot of sense. I always appreciate a book about teenagers that actually sounds like teenagers (realistic dialogue!) and this one definitely delivered on that front. I can't wait to read more of Oseman's work, and highly recommend this novel to anyone who looks at the synopsis and thinks, hey, no romance, that sounds interesting...

Reread: April 2024

Oh MAN this was even better than I’d remembered! Alice Oseman must have some type of magic up those sleeves, because this book captures the vibe of coming of age, friendship, school, everything else so well and so maturely. I cannot get over how awesome Aled and Frances are, and how AWESOME their friendship is. Sorry, this id just a ramble now, but I can’t get over it. That’s all. So good. SO

“Sometimes I think we’re the same person… but we just got accidentally split into two before we were born.”

“Do you like him?” she said.
I blinked, not quite understanding the question. “Erm, yes, obviously?”
“No, I mean like him.”
…”No, I don’t think so,” I said. “That’s a bit irrelevant, don’t you think?”
Mum frowned a little. “Irrelevant to what?”
“I don’t know, just irrelevant.” I stepped past her and started trudging upstairs, saying, “What a random question.”

This was made for people who recommend you things by listing the way the characters are marginalised.

The book’s concept was good, but the prose was so stripped down it felt incomplete and failed to properly hold your attention. Oseman still delivers a cathartic read about academic stress, family and what creators owe their fans.  That said It's very to the point and gets preachy in places.
