Autobiographical episodes in the author's young life are written in a short story format. The voice, the description of setting and characters, strung together with honesty is amaaaaazing.

I listened to the audiobook as read by the author and it is among the best I've ever listened to; I especially liked the sections where the author would sing spirituals and hymns.

The sequence in which the author writes about rape was very difficult to stomach; my heart bled for her, it brought me to tears. Angelou's young life was anything but easy, though she writes about it with such grace and understanding. She looks back with a strength and hope that serves as inspiration to readers of all walks of life.

Highly recommended audiobook; must read classic literature.

I had no idea this was an autobiography until the final page, when I remembered that my mom had gifted me "A Letter to my Daughter" for my 18th birthday. She writes a letter to a daughter she does not have, where she only has a son. I just didn't realize... wow. I still have not read the aforementioned book.

What an incredible and important story. It is littered with highlighted and underlined phrases. I recommend reading Oprah's forward after you're done. This book feels biblical to me. It is devastatingly beautiful. My words are scattered, but my love and awe for this book are not. Thank God for Maya Angelou.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I would have liked. I liked the ending better than the whole book.
