My short reflection as a Korean American reader

Forte:
  • I liked the chapters about Cathy's experience with counseling therapy and the relationship with her mother.

Shortcomings:
  • The chapters lack cohesion and were confusing in terms of time progression.
  • The book is marketed as an Asian American memoir, but a big portion of the book is neither memoir nor about the Asian American experience.
  • I got the feeling that Cathy is avoiding telling her own story and reverting to the story of others.
  • One chapter about Cathy's college years shows that a friend abused Cathy, but there is never an acknowledgement of the abuse. It is rather dismissed as a character flaw.

If you want to read about Korean American Woman's experience, I recommend Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner.

Exceptional. This collection of essays is unbearably precise, striking the most vulnerable of emotions with masterful, incisive language. I feel my own untangled, dark and shameful vulnerabilities cast under a bright white spotlight to be dissected with great precision, confidence, and relevance. What does it mean to be Asian in a neoliberal, colonised, modern world? Why am I enraged and yet why am I invisible? This is essential reading.

My favorite essays were Stand Up and Bad English. It's my bad for not knowing more about this collection going in, but I thought it was going to be more memoir-ish than essay collection. All of the essays were interesting and informative, but the collection overall lacked a sense of cohesion, imo. I'd definitely still recommend it, but I'd make the format of the book clear.

While I think I might need to reread a few times to fully get all of the layers that make up this book, I found this essay collection searing and powerful. Cathy Park Hong is unapologetic, which in itself is a radical act. She's definitely a voice to be listening to right now.
